In-Fest is a collaborative effort. It is the Artists IN Melaka FESTival
In-Fest is intended as an on-going celebration of collective creativity.
When the festival goes public on September 30th and October 1st, visitors will be welcomed as participants in several ways, such as the performances and works on display will be interactive, there is a great chill-out space for dancing & enjoying the music, of course discussions with the… artists themselves, and simple drawing materials will also be available for everyone to be inspired!
In-Fest therefore would have no meaning without it’s setting amongst the robust and friendly community of Our Town. We really are an “Artists in Melaka” festival!.

PURPOSE:
The Purpose of In-Fest is:
1. To promote the image of Melaka as a thriving center for artistic production to the Malaysian public and to tourists,
2. To promote to the public recent work by artists and musicians resident in Melaka and its environs,
3. To stimulate more active financial support from individuals and businesses in Melaka (and beyond) for the Melaka artist community as a whole.

FESTIVAL FEATURES:
“IN-FEST” event activities will include:
1. Exhibition of visual arts works by 5 selected artists from Melaka & worldwide,
2. Performances by 19 individuals and/or groups of regional musicians, many of whom have composed music for this occasion (musical performances to be concluded by 10:30pm)
3. Shaded outdoor conversation lounges and dancing areas
4. Showing of short art video productions from Melaka and worldwide artists
5. Extensive areas for visitors to create their own art
6. Flea market selling locally created & made art & jewellery
7. Light snacks and beverages available

Exhibition of visual arts works:
Artists will display their interactive drawings, paintings, montage, mobiles to effect you and make you feel new emotions.

Short art video productions:
Specialised director /artists will run their short video stories on large screens to entertain, confuse and inspire you.

Band performances:
Indie band music at its best from Malaysia most cutting bands!

Acoustic music performances:
Hear and feel the intimate live tunes of indie artists who interact with you, move you, challenge you……

Experimental music performances:
Chill out to live tunes from some of Malaysia’s best experimental Indie/DJ-musicians:

SIGNALS is a collaborative performance with video by Debora Bernagozzi and sound by Jason Bernagozzi. The video, which uses no source footage, was created during Debora’s final residency at the Experimental Television Center by using analog video feedback in combination with the Paik-Abe Raster Scanner (better known as the wobulator). During the performance, an additional layer of live digital video feedback is being combined with the recorded through a Jitter process. The audio is a combination of live and recorded processed sound.

Jason Bernagozzi is a video, sound, and new media artist experimenting with the significant features of time-based media as an evolving world language, addressing concepts concerning the liminal states of language, memory and perceptual experience. Jason received his Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Integrated Art from Alfred University in 2010. His work has been featured nationally and internationally at venues such as the European Media Arts Festival in Osnabruk, Germany and the LOOP Video Art Festival in Barcelona, Spain. Jason is currently a Visiting Lecturer in Digital Media and Animation at Alfred State College in Alfred, NY.

Debora Bernagozzi is a video artist and photographer. Her ongoing body of video work consists of gestural, abstracted videos that are more resonance than representation, created through a hybrid analog/digital method utilizing real-time video and audio processing techniques. Her photography has a documentary focus. Bernagozzi received her BFA in Video from the Atlanta College of Art in 1999 and her MFA in Electronic Integrated Art from Alfred University in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in the US and internationally. Debora is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.

Juxtaposing images in concerning music as movements like cubists such as Picasso or Braque . Emphasizing colors like fauvist such as Matisse. To get organic movements and to reach the final result with process as the abstract expressionists, like Pollock. Aware of the medium itself as the avant-garde filmmakers, like Conrad or Kubelka. Love for aphorism as human tendency like filmmaker Godard. All are going toward natural growth in respect of Taoism or Zen Buddhism. This collaboration is going to be the second trial with music improviser, Yandsen Yong, who has the intensity and lyricism like Kaoru Abe. After deconstruction by video editing, there is a kind of reality in fragments of Yandsen's playing appearing like geologic stratum. The past images have some kind of intensity which cannot be created anymore as the same as the present images. It is precious in this manner. And new images will be appearing from 'between the past and now'. Title ความมืดสีขาว (Kwaam-muud-siik-khaw) in Thai, White In The Darkness in English is a Zen Buddhism phrase which means “knowledge that cannot stop suffering and greed”. Blocking the eyes and the heart to see and to understand it, one cannot reach enlightenment. This awareness will continue into the emptiness.

Koji Tambata is a video artist with a deep interest in film, music, performance and philosophy. He gained a Bachelor of Art in Media Study at SUNY Buffalo, and his Master of Fine Art in Electronic Integrated Arts at Alfred University. He has lived in USA for about 10 years. During his stay in Buffalo, New York, he was known as “the musician who plays the video camera” in the art circle and he was always seen videotaping musicians at concerts. Koji has produced a series of solo multimedia concerts called “Music Works” since 1996 with live video, video installation, improvised and free jazz music and performance. He has participated in various festivals and events including In/Beyond Western New York, Notthatbalai Art Festival (Malaysia), (E)merging: Western and Southern New York Media Art Exhibition, CLICK! Buffalo, Artists & Models amongst others. He has collaborated with Kok Siew Wai, Yong Yandsen, Tony Conrad, Steve Baczkowski, Jonathan Galove, Hylozoa, Eliav Brand, King Sunshine, Knowmatic Tribe Sound System and more. Koji is currently living in Thailand.

Yandsen Yong plays the saxophones, clarinet and flute. Yandsen was the veteran lead vocal and band leader of rock band Moxuan in late 1990s. He then ventures into a new direction in music – free jazz and improvised music. Yandsen is the woodwind player of Klangmutationen, where it has released albums through Utech Records (USA) and Dream Sheep (Italy). Yandsen has collaborated with various artists and musicians including Goh Lee Kwang, Ng Chor-Guan, Kok Siew Wai, Darren Moore, Brian O’ Reily, Thierry Monnier, Uchihashi Kazuhisa, Damo Suzuki, Abang Guard and more. He has played in the Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Mosaic Festival Singapore, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival (Singapore) amongst others. Yandsen is a member of the Experimental Musicians & Artists Cooperative Malaysia (EMACM), co-founder of Studio in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (SiCKL), and co-director of Sama-sama Guesthouse Mini Alternative Art Festival.

LIM KEH SOON (b. 1980, Selangor) graduated from Malaysian Institute of Art in 2003, with the award for Best Student. He was a founding member of the FINDARS and took part in many experimental art and sound projects. He has previously produced a limited print comic book with sponsorship from the Balai Seni Lukis Negara and held a first solo exhibition, "Junkiemonkey" at Findars Space@Annexe (2009). Lim also actively participated in various group exhibitions that were held in Petronas Gallery, Valentine Willie Fine Art, Art Expo Malaysia '09, The Annexe Gallery, etc.

Lim's work tend to redefine of some cartoon heroes and his own imaginary comical characters to depict the environment of today’s society. The work is open for a varied response and aims to trigger memories and thoughts.

TEY BENG TZE (b. 1983, Kuala Lumpur) graduated from Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA). He is also one of the founding member of FINDARS. He has been actively participating in various group exhibitions locally since 2003 that were held in Petronas Gallery, Valentine Willie Fine Art, The Annexe Gallery, etc. and has held his first solo exhibition, "Dirty Mary Crazy Mickey" at FINDARS@Annexe (2009).

Tey's work is a self-exploration through painting, using visual language and owned experience, from bits to specific, sometimes nonsense, sometimes practical, but preferred to be darkly presented. "Darkness existed everywhere in real life, it just always being splendidly packaging", that's Tey's perspective.

Inni is Sigur Rós' second live film following 2007's tour documentary Heima. Whereas that film positioned the group in the context of their Icelandic homeland, providing geographical, social and historical perspectives on their music, Inni focuses purely on the band's performance, and stands as a stark counterpoint to Heima's kaleidoscopic richness. Where Heima was lush and colorfully expansive, Inni is spare and near-monochromatic in its tunnel vision. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia, Inni cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band, eschewing the audience for closeness, depicting how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live.

The film's atmosphere is enhanced by Morisset's re-filming of the original digital footage on 16mm, which was then re-filmed again, sometimes through prisms and other found objects, allowing inni to look and feel like something recovered from the past. Interspersed with this is archival footage drawn from the band's previous decade, dating back as far as 1998. this juxtaposition gives viewers the full scope of Sigur Rós' origins, evolution, originality and influence.

"Exit Through the Gift Shop: A Banksy Film (with Chinese subtitle)" is a film directed by Banksy, that tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant in Los Angeles, and his obsession with street art.

The film charts Guetta's constant documenting of his every waking moment on film, from a chance encounter with his cousin, the artist Invader, to his introduction to a host of street artists with a focus on Shepard Fairey and Banksy, whose anonymity is preserved by obscuring his face and altering his voice, to Guetta's eventual fame as a street artist himself.

There has been debate over whether the documentary is genuine or a mockumentary.

艺术平台：林启顺与郑名智压克力联展

眼睛背面看不见的画面，会是一个怎样的意识形态？在一个由欲望分子来架构的城市底下，存有多少份人们往往不愿正视的愚妄呢？《我坐在粪便上享用着蜜瓜炒蘑菇》画展中或许能让你得到答案。

本地有两位年轻画家——林启顺与郑名智，携手合作共同展出7副与《我坐在粪便上享用着蜜瓜炒蘑菇》主题的压克力作品。在画作中两人巧妙地都用无声的色彩来叙述，人们在世界里所储存的记忆并不属于短暂易散的云雾，也不是渗透在身上易蒸化掉的透明汗水，而是烧焦于生灵在城市表面上结成的痂。

呈现社会弊端下典型现象

每幅画作就像是一块浸透了流动生命液体的面包，涂抹在上面的则是过去、现在与未来混合而成的果酱，把面包与果酱里存在的营养给封存起来，再投射在帆布上来告知你，两位画家对社会现象的不满。由此可见，通过林启顺的《口号国土》和郑名智的《剩下最后一粒气球的小丑沉沦于人猿表演中》所呈现出来的画面都是社会弊端下的典型现象，反映当代社会人们生活中的本质。

林启顺用平淡的口吻说，其实在这个社会里，很多时候大家都被蹂躏却不自觉，还觉得那是一种非一般的享受，就好像主题一样，坐在粪便上，依然还能进食。于是，他会从画作中重新找到自觉来保持对社会的清醒度。

郑名智说每一幅作品都是属于个人探索。透过绘画与无言的色彩来说话，把在社会里累积的体会、经验，从零碎到具体，不按理牌出牌的放在画作里。他说，画作里的讯息有时是一堆废话，有时是事实。他喜欢运用黑暗的一面来呈现，因他喜欢用黑暗的角度看事。毕竟黑暗是存在的，很多时候只是被华丽的外表所包装。

Two artists hope to convey messages about our sociopolitical landscape through their surreal artworks, writes Rachel Jenagaratnam

There’s something surreal gripping some of our local artists and you’ll see this at I Too Squatted On A Stool Eating Melon Fried Mushrooms, a two-man exhibition currently held at Findars in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur.

Previously based in Central Market’s annexe, the independent space, which had been premise-less for a couple of years, is back with Tey Beng Tze and Lim Keh Soon’s paintings.

The show’s curator, Goh Lee Kwang, had this to say about the artists’ works: “Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, nuclear proliferation, demonstrations and demands from the inner self, the artists swim naked on the sound and fury of the living today.”

His words paint an accurate picture of what the works in the show entail. A motley crew of subjects, symbols and signs proliferate in their surreal landscapes, creating scenes so far removed from our surrounding, and whilst there’s a cartoon-like appearance to both artists’ works, they are anything but jovial. A sense of the morbid perpetuates and there’s an apocalyptic mood signalling that things have gone awry.

A statement and a half

In Tey’s four paintings, for instance, vicious giant cockroaches prowl and attack, ghoulish faces seem to appear from beneath the artist’s brushstrokes, and characters and objects swirl about in darkness, whirlpools and flames.

It’s like Dante’s inferno and perhaps what new Greek PM Lucas Papademos and other PIIGS (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain) leaders’ nightmares about their country’s economic situation must look like at the moment.

In fact, it’s precisely the contemporaneous that Tey and Lim’s works are all about, specifically Malaysia’s sociopolitical landscape and how it affects them. “No choice,” says Lim. “I can’t escape. It’s what I breathe every day,” he says, when asked about the subjectmatter of his paintings.

His works are highly personal. In Kingdom of Slogan, Lim addresses disillusions about how he envisaged our country as a child and how things have actually panned out. “I was strongly impressed when Dr Mahathir talked about Vision 2020. I totally believed it. I was in Standard Six, thinking our country would become an advanced country when I turned 40, and I was so proud. But growing up, you realise that everything is just a slogan. When you talk about application, it’s different, it’s another story,” he laments.

Of symbolisms and...

The artist points out the ribbon tied around a hand in the top left-hand corner of Kingdom of Slogan. It symbolises how things are often packaged beautifully, but often turn out to be marketing gimmicks (“very nice to hear and see, but actually it’s different”) and the train in the painting, where bodies and entrails spill onto a checkerboard surface, refers to Malaysia’s huge working population of which he is a part of.

Tey addresses similar themes in his works, painting with angst about incidents that have happened in Malaysia in the last few years. “Basically, I use many brushstrokes and I am influenced by anime characters,” he reveals.

Like his contemporary Lim, his works are replete with elements (“I use a lot of hidden symbols,” he states). There is a mat rempit hidden in one of his paintings, and in Fleshes and Space, a minute figure of Superman refers to the shooting of 15-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah by a policeman in Shah Alam last year.

“The content is about what’s happening today in our society, but we just presented it with surreal (qualities) and a comic-like style,” explains Lim.

“And we chose this theme (I Too Squatted On A Stool Eating Melon Fried Mushrooms) because we wanted to illustrate our pictures. Those who read the title will picture someone in an uncomfortable situation but who still keeps doing normal, daily things. We also try to inject something funny in what you read, to capture people’s attention,” he continues.

Small but arresting

For a fairly small showcase, a lot is being said in this exhibition. Two young Malaysians are making observations about their country on a fairly quiet level, but they touch on big themes that make you take notice. Plus, visually, the exhibits do arrest your attention.

Indeed, there’s precedence for their style of painting, and all justifiably popular. Salvador Dali’s surreal landscapes come to mind. But perhaps more relevant, we have Hieronymus Bosch, that 15th Century Dutch artist whose imagination knew no bounds and who created fantastical images to convey messages on morality.

It’s arguable that Tey and Lim’s paintings even bear traces of Chinese paintings depicting hell, where punishments for sins are depicted in all its brutal glory. But of more interest is that their paintings only have one or two degrees of separation from other Malaysian artists.

The element of fantasy is also seen in the works of current Rimbun Dahan artist-in-residence, Haslin Ismail (and a few others), and the mention of Chan Kok Hooi’s early works (his Non

Series I and II especially) was greeted with an affirmation that the older artist has indeed been a point of influence.

Also, it turns out that Tan Chin Kuan, another senior artist, was one of their teachers at the Malaysian Institute of Art.

Solving a surreal dilemma

With categories still being a little vague with regards to Malaysian contemporary art, where do put this showcase? The surreal? A sociosurreal style of painting? Tey and Lim’s paintings are minefields of symbols and signs, all combusting in colourful disarray. Elements float about the canvas — some mundane, some eliciting a second glance from the viewers — and with both admitting that much of their inspiration come from their fascination with manga and comic books, we have one bit of the mystery unveiled — that many of our local artists, especially male, have applied the aesthetics of these graphic works into their art, lending to images that are at once highly narrative and distinct.

Tey and Lim’s works in I Too Squatted On A Stool Eating Melon Fried Mushrooms have been a conduit for them to speak about the happenings around us, and the issues they raise in their works are symptomatic of a generation of Malaysians that were fed so many promises in their youth and who have now grown up and become disillusioned.

The abuse of power, Diaspora, and the growing gulf between the haves and have-nots are just some of the themes that their works loosely encapsulate, and it’s certain these concerns hit home for so many today. And like the comic books these artists have been inspired by, you are reminded of the good versus evil theme when you look at their paintings.

Deceiving, enticing reality

Tey and Lim haven’t just made marks on canvases, but have in fact painted very poignant pictures. But can their artworks change what’s happening in our country? Can their paintings mobilise social change — if not now, at some point later? “I think if you want to change something, everyone should have the same thought. If it’s just one individual, then it’s impossible,” says Lim pragmatically.

No illusions there, but artworks doused in fantasy can be a potent tool to engage audiences to consider the present. Like a symbol-laden dream, it’s just about uncovering the meaning behind each element presented.

Surreal, imaginative and yet intensely real, these are great artworks to have in our sphere.

YEO JOON HAN’s first love is music but, sadly, it is an unrequited love. So he practised Law, wrote copy and wound up an impoverished filmmaker. His first short film, “Adults Only”, won the Special Mention at the Venice Film Festival in 2006. Armed with a few other obscure awards, he wangled enough financing to complete his first feature in 2008. “Sell Out!” also got away with a prize from the Venice Film Festival and has travelled (without its director) to over 25 festivals. LIM KEH SOON graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 2003, with the award for Best Student. He was a founding member of the FINDARS and took part in many experimental art and sound projects. He has previously produced a limited print comic book with sponsorship from the Balai Seni Lukis Negara and held a first solo exhibition, "Junkiemonkey" at Findars Space@Annexe (2009). Lim also actively participated in various group exhibitions that were held in Petronas Gallery, Valentine Willie Fine Art, Art Expo Malaysia '09, The Annexe Gallery, etc.

Lim's work tend to redefine of some cartoon heroes and his own imaginary comical characters to depict the environment of today’s society. The work is open for a varied response and aims to trigger memories and thoughts.

TEY BENG TZE graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA). He is also one of the founding member of FINDARS. In-Fest is a collaborative effort. It is the Artists IN Melaka FESTival

In-Fest is intended as an on-going celebration of collective creativity.

When the festival goes public on September 30th and October 1st, visitors will be welcomed as participants in several ways, such as the performances and works on display will be interactive, there is a great chill-out space for dancing & enjoying the music, of course discussions with the... artists themselves, and simple drawing materials will also be available for everyone to be inspired!
In-Fest therefore would have no meaning without it’s setting amongst the robust and friendly community of Our Town. We really are an “Artists in Melaka” festival!.

PURPOSE:
The Purpose of In-Fest is:
1. To promote the image of Melaka as a thriving center for artistic production to the Malaysian public and to tourists,
2. To promote to the public recent work by artists and musicians resident in Melaka and its environs,
3. To stimulate more active financial support from individuals and businesses in Melaka (and beyond) for the Melaka artist community as a whole.

FESTIVAL FEATURES:
“IN-FEST” event activities will include:
1. Exhibition of visual arts works by 5 selected artists from Melaka & worldwide,
2. Performances by 16 individuals and/or groups of regional musicians, many of whom have composed music for this occasion (musical performances to be concluded by 10:30pm)
3. Shaded outdoor conversation lounges and dancing areas
4. Showing of short art video productions from Melaka and worldwide artists
5. Extensive areas for visitors to create their own art
6. Flea market selling locally created & made art & jewellery

Fans of local indie music are in for a treat as The Actors Studio and Soundscape Records present a second coming of The Hidden Sessions, a bi-monthly series for homegrown acts to expose their music to a wider audience.

Each band gets to rock it out with audiences for a full 45 minutes, coupled with a decent venue and good quality lighting and sound. Feels almost like a concert of sorts, doesn’t it?

The second installment runs for two nights with all new lineups of fresh talent at The Actors Studio Lot 10 featuring names that should be familiar to all you hardcore indie buffs out there.

A nation that is seemingly well-developed and peaceful, shattered by a mere demonstration of the people's will. Why is the people's democracy incarcerated? When those in power fail to address the rights of the people, should the people not contemplate and decide for our future? We only hope for our voices to be heard. This is a documentary about a peaceful rally, the many wrongs perpetuated before and after this movement of the people that happened on the 9th of July, bringing a new wave of political conciousness especially amongst the youth and those who truly love this nation. An attempt to uncover the truth buried beneath the avalanche of lies, to discover the essence underneath a simple call for rights made complex deliberately by vested powers, as well as the participants beliefs and convictions.

He is a KL based electronic audio artist who performs live as a singular entity. His pieces can be described as richly textural, from fractal process music to neo-romantic electronica, that are harmonically complex yet awash in consonance. Rainf experiments an array of hardware equipment s such as Yamha Rs-7000, Korg KPIII, Technics SLDZ1200 digital turntable, A&H Xone 02 and Korg EMX - 1.

He is also a member of one of Malaysia 's most promising Cantonese dark-core band, Dropout (formerly known as Mumster) as turntablist and sampler.

Soundscape Records and Cream Music present LYMBYC SYSTYM & CAROLINE Live in Kuala Lumpur, two mesmerizing and intimate experimental + electro-pop musical acts set to wow local music fans once again on 31 July 2011 at Black Box, Map @ Publika.

Supporting the two brothers and sisters mega-duo is the nascent local indie darling, LOVE/COMES, who shall be welcoming music fans to this intimate musical evening with their vein of 80s post punk and shoegazing.

Emerging from the Land of the Hornbills, the beautiful multi-cultural city Kuching, Love/Comes has been started gigging around at small clubs, college and mini stadium since 2006.

The band’s founder, Reynold Ahviet (singer/guitarist). The band’s line up also has seen changes from the early days to the present. Yet, the band manage to cut some demos for friends and fans entitled “Letters and Postcards” which available through online streaming.

As the band’s music progressed, the heavily use of distorted pitch-bending echoes guitar work has push the band further for the band’s future released. From postpunk, back to the dream pop shoegaze.

Somewhere in 2010,the band recorded five songs at a studio in Kuching. It took awhile as the band was funding the studio time by themselves.

By March 2011, a split EP with Kuala Lumpur’s postpunk/shoegaze band Partimelovers, is due for released. The band also began to step up their live appearances, developing a small following and venturing outside Kuching/Kuala Lumpur for gigs. First single also has been released “Ellis Road” from the split EP and followed by the second single “His Gesture Of Love”.

About Nurul Izzah :

Nurul Izzah binti Anwar (born November 19, 1980) is a Malaysian politician from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), and is the current Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai. She is the daughter of Anwar Ibrahim, a former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and the current de facto opposition leader and of the PKR.

After her father's arrest in 1998 on charges of sodomy and graft, Nurul Izzah campaigned for his release, speaking at international venues against the actions of the Malaysian government.

In the 2008 general election, Nurul Izzah contested the seat of Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur, which was contested by three candidates. There were speculations that she ran for the seat with the intention of handing it over to her father, who was disqualified from running for office until April 2008, though she quickly rejected such claims. The seat was defended by three-term incumbent Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who was Minister for Women, Family and Community Development in the Barisan Nasional government. Initial reports suggested that Shahrizat would retain the seat, as she had been a popular Minister, and in the 2004 election retained her seat with a majority of 15,288. However, on polling day, Nurul Izzah won 21,728 votes to Shahrizat's 18,833, and was elected as the new MP for Lembah Pantai.

The defeat of the powerful three-term incumbent by a new face was one of the many surprises in the 2008 election, which saw significant losses of parliamentary seats by the ruling party.

In November 2010, Nurul Izzah was elected one of the Vice Presidents of Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

Carburetor Dung is a Malaysian punk rock band formed in 1991 in Kuala Lumpur. Formed by bassist Fendi as a band called Stormfish but later changed its name to Carburetor Dung when guitarist Joe Kidd joined the fold. The name came from Lester Bangs' book Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung.

Influences by this fucked-up world, its attending insanity and population which is made up of generally greedy, intolerant, moronic monkeys. They've been around and kicking the dead horse for more than a decade now. The Dung strives to save our wonderful world from those who mercilessly laugh at all the nice things like flowers, peace, love & understanding...

The Maharajah Commission is one of the rare Kuala Lumpur outfits confidently independent and punk enough to exploit its individuality and freedom. With mostly deconstructionist rock and exploratory instrumental jams, the band's debut Dialogue Amoureux (Monkey Records/AGE, 2003) is a sinister and unrepentant work of free-form experimentation that defies description.

Started late year 2009, as Constellations of Sparky. The band was build more of friendship and common interest between childhood friends. As Constellations of Sparky the band played some gigs here and there around KL namely Urban Attics, Mark’s Place , Laundry, Artista Bar, Ovo Bar and Mint Magazine competition in which the band managed to secure second runner up.

And as time goes by, some members came and go because of life commitments. In which new members were recruited to replace lost members. With a fresh new start we decide to have a slight change of direction in terms of music. With that comes Seconds to Collide. Presenting to you indie sounds with an emotive touch.

Fetus

About Fetus :

Fetus was formed in late 2005, heavily influenced by Japanese eroguro band "ムック MUCC". All members of Fetus are art graduated except the drummer. They started the band by covering a lot of Japanese visual-kei music.

Fetus performed for the first time in 2006 and guitatist Ho-Fun left the band in 2007, it turns Fetus into a 4-piece quartet. Later, they started to get bored with all the covers and start writing their own songs in the late 2007.

Their music are about relationship, life and adult videos culture.

Xerpent

About Xerpent :

Xerpent is a boy band from Malaysia with four good looking young members and they aim to be the best boy band in town. Xerpent is playing the most trendy music in late 90s, *R&B music.

Xerpent is heavily influenced by the pop culture from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and they are a big fan of Jay Chou. You will find Xerpent's music easy to digest as it is played with extremely simple, repeating riffs and lyrics. However, you will find the lyrics and vocals incomprehensible as the vocalist imitates his idol, Jay Chou's singing style.

Sadly, Xerpent has been banned in competitions and appearance in local TV network. With great disappointment, they turn to indie scene, hoping to be discover and gain their fame.

His pieces can be described as richly textural, from fractal process music to neo-romantic electronica, that are harmonically complex yet awash in consonance. If Like Silver was a TV show, it would be The Outer Limits. The experimental electro outfit charts an ethereal trajectory into space with stories of android falling in love, wormholes, time travel, and what it means to be human.

Not so far of to David Bowie’s idea of Ziggy Stardust, the space invading duo, Adlin and Teoh, gathers inspiration from the sci-fi genre through copious consumption of TV shows, movies, books and comics of the like.

Self Conscious Acronymed Man releases an epic 39 song 3 disc album entitled Haji Abdul Aziz Haji Ali (HAAHA). You might know him better as the fire breathing, cross-dressing guy in Ciplak and the trumpeter for Citizens of Ice Cream and Furniture, better known as Aziz. HAAHA shows a much more mellow side of Aziz, crooning lines like “In my weakest moments / I think of you” over a stripped down bedroom acoustic guitar sound.

Arguably the best band in the current Malaysian local Chinese independent scene, their energetic live set, with its fair share of double pedal thumping, funkoid metal interludes, jarring dual guitar hammerings and spirited vocals, had fists pumping the air in glory.

You Black Emperor and Mogwai, these six Penangites take post rock to another level by combining noisy guitar riffs with heavy baselines and spine shattering drums to deliver a dark and almost “creepy” cinematic experience.

Over the years, the band has had changes in its lineup, slowing down their progress. Come 2011, Coma has found a solid lineup, one that will drive the band forward, with hopes of releasing an EP by the end of the year.

Their music has been labeled as “Cinematic”, “Hardcore” and “Intense”, three words that sum up Coma and the experience they deliver.

【本刊记者撰述】106名艺术和文学创作者发表联合声明支持干净与公平选举联盟的选举诉求，并不满政府因国家文学桂冠沙末赛益在净选盟推介礼上发表《圣洁的篝火》诗作而被传召录供。他们也希望我国可以有一个更自由的环境供创作者自由创作。

106 名艺术和文学创作者今天发表联合声明，他们是一群活跃于马来西亚创意共同体的成员，始终以创造新的文化为己任，默默地促进自由、平等与社会正义的普世价值，与时俱进。换个方式说，我国多族群、多文化以及多信仰的生活环境提供了源源不绝的创作资源，同时也开启了诸多可能的审美视野，不管是诗人、小说家、音乐家、舞蹈家、剧作家或者美术家等显然都从中获益。

这份三语的文告得到106名艺术和文学创作者连署，包括我国老中青的艺术创作者、表演艺术者、诗人和教授等。其中包括艺术创作者黄海昌、诺哈宁（Nur Hanim Khairuddin）、艺术家李健省、雕塑家东姑沙比里（Tengku Sabri Tengku Ibrahim）、水彩画家郑辉明、Valentine Willie画廊创办人Valentine Willie、备受尊敬的文艺教授西蒂再侬（Siti Zainon Ismail）、文化评论Sharad Kuttan、新加坡国立大学东南亚研究院长Goh Beng Lan、作家庄若、年轻作家梁静芬、杨佳仁、创作者拉末（Rahmat Harun）、理科大学艺术博物馆馆长哈斯怒（Hasnul Jamal Saidon）、著名景观设计师Ng Sek San等。

不满传召文学桂冠录供

然而，近来国内频频发生镇压异见人士与侵害基本人权的事件，却使他们感到不平和不安。

执法当局援引《煽动法令》和《警察法令》传召国家文学桂冠沙末赛益（A. Samad Said，右图中）录供，莫非他犯了甚么滔天之大罪？年逾七十高龄的沙末赛益，不过是在净选盟2.0揭幕礼上朗读一首诗作：“我们让火焰折磨得越来越痛苦，惟仍然坚持高呼默迪卡的托咐……”（《圣洁的篝火》）内容展现出其一如既往感时忧国的诗人气质。对此，我们深感不平。

他们说：“不安则是，建国已近半个世纪了，创作的自由空间不但未见扩大，犹有甚者，我们的生活仍旧笼罩在“恐惧的文化”之中。我们几乎可以洞见，许多荒诞无稽的“手铐” 与“脚镣”很快将会应运而生，以便进一步箝制那些像沙末赛益前辈般崇尚公正、追求民主的文化生产者；如此强阻硬栏的政治伎俩，恐怕只会导致我国文化发展倒退五十年！”

身为创意共同体的一份子，他们深感不能置身度外，遂联合起来发表一则声明，兹分述如下：

一、自我表达：他们认同所有文化生产者均有选择个人政治立场之权力，创作自由——正如言论自由或者人身自由般——必然是一种不受他人干预的宪赋人权之一。唯有处在相对自由的环境里，文化生产者始能充分地实现自我表达的价值意义，他／她更不至于沦为权力博弈下的牺牲者。

二、理性对话：他们呼吁执法当局采以开明、公正、且充满智慧的专业手法，而非通过过时的法令扰乱理性对话之进行。借助网络知悉，沙末赛益纯粹抒发了本身对民主对自由的憧憬，诗人并无谩骂式、攻击性的非理性情绪；在紧密互动的信息时代，企图妖魔化良好公民的手段是行不通的。

三、净化选举：他们支持由净选盟2.0所倡导的八大主张，即全面清理选举名册、改善邮寄选举程序、实施点墨制、至少21天竞选期、政党公平在媒体曝光、加强《选举法令》执法、消除贿选、停止龌龊政治等。无论如何，迄今为止，有关诉求仍未获得选委会高层领导的回应，大家为此抱憾。

他们表示：“我们草拟此声明之际，净选盟已宣布将‘709大游行’改在体育馆举行了。惟不管其后续行动为何，我们冀望所有不自由的心灵都获得释放，则我国的上空能够泛出一道道人性的光辉！”

The Hidden Sessions Vol.2

The Hidden Sessions is a series of two-night double-bill shows that will be held on bi-monthly basis. The aim of the show is to provide a platform for second-tier bands to expose their music to a wider audience.

The concept behind the show is to allow bands to perform a full-length show (minimum 45 minutes) in a decent venue that equipped with good quality sound and lighting system, and at the same time to enable attendees to explore new music dimensions with fresh music performances.

With spectacular sound, lighting and live visual projection arrangements, The Actors Studio provides the perfect setting for a intimate to mid scale independent gigs.

Japanese screamo and hardcore band ENVY is back again! Soundscape Records is happy to announce a one-night only performance by the band, happening on 17th June at Pentas 2, KLPAC.

In 2009, the band played their first gig in Kuala Lumpur, much to the delight of their die-hard fans. The band are renowned for their blistering, high energy live sets which was driven by howling vocals, melodic guitars and most recently, the epic tendencies of post-rock. It's no surprise that ENVY have increasingly found inspiration in cinematic rock and experimental ambient music - genres that historically circumvent cultural trappings.

They have released 5 studio albums and have supported bands such as Mogwai, ISIS, Converge, Explosions in the Sky, Locust, Lighting Bolt and Hot Cross.

Recently they have played at Japan’s biggest festival, the Fuji Rock Festival, as well as international festivals such as the All Tomorrow’s Parties.

Their newly-released album, “Recitation” is a fully realized vision from a band at their most inspired. Wong Eng Leong, Wong Min Lik, Tey Beng Tze, Lim Keh Soon, Hee Chee Way, and Chong Kim Chiew, all with very strong self-awareness, self motivation, and making art in high spirit; also they are actively involved in local arts scenes. With 5 of them graduated from Malaysian Institute of Art (M.I.A.) - Eng Leong, Min Lik and Beng Tze are from Fine Art Department, major in oil painting; Keh Soon and Chee Way are from Graphic Department, major in Illustration. Kim Chiew graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in China, major in oil painting.
There are many ways to express yourself; you can become a writer, composer, film maker, etc… Visual artists, in a way, decide to visualize their expressions. As an artist (mind you, this is neither a job title nor a position), you might have to go through a very painful process of inner-searching (not only sitting at the mamak or café to do brain storming, those are designers, just in case you don’t know the difference), before you can find “something” called your own.
The act of visualization utilizes a few common techniques: form, line, colors and planes, and lastly composition. Everybody subconsciously understand them and use them to express their ideas or record down their thoughts or memory but somehow it can be very personal too, with the topic and subject matter chosen by respective artists, they create a new language of their own, a new dialog or a new connection is created between the artist and the viewer through their medium of visualization.
And this is the most interesting part about the visual art, not only one can appreciate the beauty of an art work, one can also learn about the personal language of the artist, break the da vinci code and decipher the hidden message, share the joy and passion of every individual artists.
About the artists:
Min Lik created a series of work that depicts an obscure sense of memories, and led us to confront the inner most expressions that we may have forsaken long ago. These adorable creatures allow us to escape from brutal reality and to seek for spiritual peace and joyfulness.
Beng Tze uses a mixture of media (oil, charcoal, ink, oil pastels, pencil, and acrylic) on his artworks. He loves to paint and draw since childhood. Art is an expression of your experiences and memories for him. In truth, his work is inspired by everything around him, from outsider’s art, to Radiohead, cartoons & toys. He claims: “My works are purely autobiographical; they are exploration of life around me. They are documentations about me as well as the people and things around me. What I really like to preserve is what interests me.”
Keh Soon’s work is open for a varied response and aims to trigger memories and thoughts, especially in environment of today.
Hee Chee Way is interested in photographic and digital art, and likes to insert them into his painting and illustration. He often manipulates printed images and combines them with hand-drawn elements to create collages of reality and fantasy.
Kim Chiew’s art practices provoke us to ‘think (and rethink) about our national developments and aspirations’. He has exhibited widely in Malaysia since 1994 and has held his first solo exhibition, Isolation House at Rumah Air Panas gallery in July 2005. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions around Kuala Lumpur.

flica is euseng seto , an electro-acoustic artist and graphic designer residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Born in 1982, he begun his music activities in 2005 with his first electronic duo project muxu, whose last offering is released by Monotonik Label (United States).

Performance description:
Beneath the Willow Tree is a ethereal audio/visual project that consists of dreamlike imagery and abstract hand-painted 16mm film combined with vocal and electronically processed sounds, performed live by artist/musician, Jax Deluca. This melancholic performance acts out a symbolic interpretation of the Willow Tree, which represents healing, inner visions, and dreams - a mediation of darkness and light, fabricated with elements of natural and synthetic mediums.

Artist Bio:
Jax Deluca (b. 1982) is an artist who lives in Buffalo, NY. Her artwork takes on various forms, from stark gallery and public installations, to abstract video, film, painting and costumed public performance. She teaches workshops in strategic sound-making and is the Director of Programming at Squeaky Wheel/Buffalo Media Resources.

Formal studies at the Division of Expanded Media at Alfred University culminated in The Aesthetics of Video and Sound, a self-directed major that combines music theory, religious and ethnographic studies, communications and experimental media making. Deriving concepts from the Johari Window model, recent works require audience participation to encourage a heightened sense of self-awareness and seek answers using methods of chance and contemplation. Sound performance work has varied from expressive improvisation to digitally composed, making use of vocal toning, handcrafted instruments, guitar, piano, and found objects ranging in the genres of classical, avant-garde, new folk, free improvisation, and immersive noise. Current projects include immersive drones under the name of Communication Vault and live vocal and electronic sound processing with W ((aa)) ou w, a free improvisational group.

Jax has performed at Big Orbit’s Soundlab, Kitchen Distribution, Nobody’s Art Center, Alfred University, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Rochester Contemporary, Buffalo Arts Studio, A/V Space Rochester, Music is Art Festival, The Ingenuity Festival, Infringement Festival, The Project Lodge (Madison, WI), and many DIY performance spaces across the United States. Her various musical configurations have performed alongside acts such as Jackie O’ Motherfucker, Sir Richard Bishop, Six Organs of Admittance, Elvis Perkins, Steve Baczkowski, Okervill River, Wharton Tier’s Ensemble, Parts and Labor, and Jana Hunter.

She is a strong advocate of independent artists and has been featured in The Buffalo News, Buffalo Spree, Buffalo Rising, Block Club Regional Publication, The Artery, and WBFO 88.7 Buffalo. From 2002-2004, her award-winning college radio show 'Corporate Screws' showcased independent music artists and featured special guest performances that were recorded and distributed in limited edition packages. In 2004, she moved to Buffalo, NY and opened Arte Brutale, an avant-garde music, art and performance space that showcased regional artists and touring musical acts on a shoestring budget. She continues to support the local Buffalo art and music scene and actively curates media arts programming for Squeaky Wheel and Beyond/In Western New York 2010, a regional biennial exhibition in conjunction with The Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Her work has been exhibited and presented internationally, including CEPA Gallery (2010), The Richmond Center Atrium Gallery at Western Michigan University (2009), ArtSpace Buffalo (2009), Smackmellon (2008), Burchfield-Penney Art Center for the Beyond/In Western NY Biennial (2007), Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival (2006), Visual Studies Workshop Rochester (2006) ,Squeaky Wheel (2005), Division of Expanded Media at Alfred University (2004), The Science and Art International Digital Art Exhibition in Shanghai, China (2003), and in various film festivals in Europe and Asia. She has received a NYFA SOS Award Grant (2008), NYFA MARK program recipient (2008), and held residencies at Squeaky Wheel and The Experimental Television Center.

Wong Eng Leong (Malaysia)

Leong is an outstanding graduate from Malaysia Institute of Art (MIA). He was a co-founder of an artist run space Findars. Findars, was an important contemporary multi diciplinary exhibition and performance spaces that survived for 1 years, before disbanded in 2009. Findars continue existing without space as a collective. As a contemporary multi diciplinary artist, his work often deal with political and social issues. He had exhibited his work, locally and internationally.

Intan Rafiza Abu Bakar (Malaysia)

Intan is multi diciplinary artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A graduate of Fine Art from UiTM, Shah Alam, Intan works on many mediums of art, like painting, sculpture, writing, installation and performance. In her works, she express women issues, usually from a feminist perspective. Now she is working as a Curator at The Malaysia National Art Gallery.

Mongkol Plienbangchang (Thailand)

Mongol Plienbangchang is a painter, poet and performance artist and has performed since 1995. He is an active staff of ASIATOPIA’s organizing committee and has always been involved in art & social movements groups. His performances are usually very intense, mostly dealing with political sphere of Thai politics and Globalized social situation. He has published 2 books of his drawings and poems ‘Inner & Outer’ and ‘the Man numbers Zero’.

We are delighted to welcome back Japanese instrumental rock outfit Mono to headline the concert. The band played an awe-inspiring show at KLPAC last year that ranks among the best live experiences we’ve never witnessed and it was described as “epic and mind-blowing” by the reviewers.

The band will be kicking-off their Asia tour in May, their newest tour will hit China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. At every turn, KL-based band Furniture attempts to strike an elusive balance between bold invention and comforting familiarity in its music. The search for this very balance set the band on its way to constructing its sophomore album They Made Me Out Of Dreams You’ve Forgotten.

Five years of writing, rehearsing and road-testing sees the band diverging from the atmospheric post-rock/shoegaze sound of its debut Twilight Chases The Sun, focussing instead on exploring conventional song structures as a catalyst for invention. The resulting output showcases new music that is more rhythmically and vocally driven while still marrying the epic and sweeping foundation the band has built on their debut, creating a sound that is uniquely Furniture.

The new album makes bold jumps across a diverse sonic palette, ranging from the fist-in-the-air indie rock of False Start and Vacancies to the luscious string-driven balladry of Jane Behind the Glass and even arriving at a touch of uncharacteristic soul on Lagu Chenta (Impenetrably Yours). It is an outcome that was every bit intended as it was natural, given the band’s diverse influences, adventurous approach and disregard for genre conventions.

Having played many major local and regional music festivals such as KLue Urbanscapes, Baybeats, Rock the World, plus Singapore and Thailand tours, the band is excited to sink its collective teeth into live shows and to present these fresh cuts for both existing fans and new fans alike.

This special night will witness a live collaborative improvisational set from both acts followed by the sensorial light & noise performance by Norwegian duo, MoHa!, and the noise antics of Berlin-based London musician, Horacio Pollard.

About MoHa:

MoHa! are two young Norwegian musicians, Anders Hana on guitar & synthesizer and Morten J.Olsen on drums and supercollider. They have been working together since 1998 in various corners of experimental music and in different settings. Their first release on Rune Grammofon was “Raus aus Stavanger” in 2006. The release gained a lot of national and international recognition. Their sophomore, “Norwegianism”, was regarded as one of the best records of the year in 2007 under the ʻOuter Limitsʼ category in the renowned music magazine, The Wire. Their music was described by BBC as “funky heavy metal musique concrete”.

In 2008 there was a drastic change in MoHa!ʼs music where they moved from being improvisational to more strictly composed material. After a lot of rehearsing and about 70 concerts in Europe, the duo recorded “One-Way Ticket to Candyland” and “Jeff Careyʼs MoHa!”, both released on Rune Grammofon to rave reviews. MoHa!ʼs music is best described as an extreme Aphex Twin meets Merzbow – precise, revolutionary and staggeringly intense.

Horacio Pollard is a Berlin/London based musician who works with mind-altering obscure noise creations. He started making music in 2000 with his 3-piece band, Cau_Cational Betreet, who built a small following by playing f*cked up music in strange places like motorway bridges, shopping centers, quarries and church roofs, to name a few.

The Maharajah Commission

This is one band that is in no danger of being overexposed. And thank heavens for that. Buka Kolektif is proud to present BUKA JALAN International Performance Art Festival from 25 – 28 February 2011 at the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. The festival brings together 16 international and local artists in an exciting program that includes workshops, talks and performances.

Considered an experimental and contemporary visual art from, performance art often uses strong imagery, local materials and the human body. It c...an be presented anywhere, be it an art gallery, the street or a shopping mall. As such, it has the potential to reach audiences in completely different ways than conventional object-based art such as painting or sculpture.

Through performance art, we can make daring, humorous or insightful statements that cut across boundaries and bring different communities together.

Many Malaysian visual artists have participated in international performance art festivals in Asia, Europe and North America. There have also been some local performance art events. However, Malaysia has yet to organize a public performance art festival of its own. With the generous support of the National Art Gallery, this will be our modest effort to start the first international performance art festival in Malaysia that is open to the public.

About the artist:

Cai Qing has been living and working as an independent artist in Europe and New York City since 1989. He is currently an Asst. Prof. at School of Art, Design and Media, NTU, Singapore.

He uses performance, installation, video and images to reveal his feelings and explain his ideas. The concept in most of his art is ‘observe and be observed’. He is interested in people of various backgrounds in different societies. He enjoys interacting with different people and is often inspired by them.

In addition to being an artist, Chai Qing has also curated several important art shows. In 1998 he has co-curated Trace of Existence, China’s first contemporary art exhibition in a private space, where he also showed his performance Cultivating. Long March trough Europe (2005, Kassel, Germany) was a collaborative effort between several artists who utilized the Red Army to symbolize the revolutionary Chinese spirit in the western contemporary art world. Drift (2005, New York) was a show dealing with homeless people and refugees. In 2008 he curated Construction before Destruction, the last performance show in Sifo art village before its modernization by local authorities.

About the moderator:

Ray Langenbach (MFA, PhD) is originally from Boston, now living and working in Kuala Lumpur. Langenbach “performs theory, ” focusing on cognitive phenomena & propaganda. His video works, installations and performances have been presented in the Singapore Film Festival, Philippines Film Festival, Film Festival of the South, Norway, Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Singapore Art Museum, the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, Whitney Museum of Art (New York), Museum of Neon Art (Los Angeles), LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), Nevada Museum of Art (Reno), National Centre for the Arts (Mumbai), Artspace (Sydney), 3rd Werkleitz Biennial-Germany, Asia Pacific Triennale, Gwangju Biennale and others. Langenbach curates and writes cultural theory. He has published in Art Asia Pacific, Artlink, Asian Art News and Afterimage. He served as Singapore Editorial Consultant for World Art, and appears in several collections including ‘House of Glass: Culture, Modernity and the State’ in Southeast Asia, Oxford Dictionary of Performance (2004).

Now in its 12th year, Asiatopia is one of the most important performance art festivals in Asia. Artist, educator and festival organizer Padungsak Kochsomrong tells us more about Asiatopia and performance art in neighboring Thailand.

About the artist:

Padungsak Kochsomrong was born in Bangkok in 1964. He received a BFA in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Art, Chiang Mai University in 1991 and a Masters degree in Art Education at the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok in 1999. As the Director of Studio Xang, Chiang Mai, Board member of MAP Foundation, he champions initiatives that combine art, education, and activism.

Padungsak is also a practicing artist and Head of Painting Department, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. He has performed and exhibited widely, nationally and internationally. He is an organizer and frequent participant of The Asiatopia International Performance Art Festival held annually in Bangkok and Chiang Mai since 1998.

ABOUT BUKA KOLEKTIF

BUKA KOLEKTIF is a group of young Malaysian artists interested in PERFORMANCE ART as a powerful form of expression that can easily be appreciated by all members of society. We believe in INCLUSIVENESS, DIALOGUE and the idea of ‘ART FOR ALL’.

We organize performances, forums and informal dialogues in public spaces, such as:

BUKA MULUT - A unique performance art event at a restaurant;
BUKA BAJU - An open discussion on performance art in Malaysia; and
BUKA MATA - Performance art event in collaboration with Pesta Frinjan, Shah Alam.

Buka Kolektif has strong networks with artists in Malaysia, ASEAN and internationally. Through mutual collaboration, we aim to create more discourse and awareness about performance art within the art community.

We also place equal importance on audience development and participation. Our events are meant to be as welcoming to the public as possible!

Going by the name BUKA, we keep the spirit of openness at the heart of our activities.

WHAT IS PERFORMANCE ART?

PERFORMANCE ART is different from performing arts, such as theater, music and dance. It is an experimental and contemporary art form. Historically, performance art developed out of interactions between many art disciplines including poetry, literature, theater, music and visual art. Many believe it birthed from the anti-war 'Dada' art movement in Neutral Zurich during World War I.

International contemporary visual art practices and institutions recognize performance art as a valid visual art form, alongside object-based art like painting, sculpture and installation. Performance art ventures into the idea of a non-object art, which is temporal and involves the experience of the audience and performance artist. In comparison, object-based art like painting and sculpture is meant to be static and long-lasting.

Performance art explores the idea of concept, process and live art. Performance artists are not acting. They are doing a performance with gestures, images and body actions. Some performances are created from ordinary daily activities like sitting face to face for three days or walking backwards for 48 hours. Performance art seldom has a script or prepared dialogue. It can also happen anywhere, be it an art gallery or public spaces like parks and shopping malls.

There are hundreds of performance art festivals around the world today. Performance art is often included in major visual art exhibitions and biennales, like Gwangju Biennale (South Korea), Venice Biennale (Italy) and Documenta Festival (Germany).

In the 1970s, many Malaysian artists explored performance art. These include Redza Piyadasa, an art critic and visual artist, poets Salleh Ben Joned and Abdul Ghafar Ibrahim, and Anak Alam, an art collective led by Latiff Mohidin. In the 1980s, Anak Alam's renowned poet Pyanhabib started doing iconic public performances, with poetry reading under street neon lights at night in various places in Kuala Lumpur.

Since the 1990s Malaysian visual artists have participated in international performance art festivals in Asia, Europe and North America. There have been some major local performance art events like Stopover and Satu Kali. However, Malaysia has yet to organize a public performance art festival of its own. With the generous support of National Art Gallery, this will be our modest effort to start the first international performance art festival in Malaysia that is open to the public.

BUKA JALAN FEATURED ARTISTS

MALAYSIA

Aisyah Baharuddin is a full time artist working with installation art, wall painting, mixed media and performance art.

Akbar a.k.a Bebe is from Indonesia and currently resides in Kuala Lumpur. Bebe was an active member of Taring Padi, a cultural collective from Yogyakarta until 2005. In 2004, he held a touring exhibition in Malaysia showing his works at several spaces including Lost Generation Space and Yayasan Kesenian Perak (Ipoh). He has worked with Food Not Bombs KL and Ricecooker. In 2005 and 2009, he was an organizer for Notthatbalai, a multi disciplinary art festival held at several venues In Kuala Lumpur and participated in SatuKali Performance Art Event.

Ray Langenbach is a performance artist, documentary filmmaker and conceptual curator. He writes art criticism, cultural theory and queer theory. His installations and performance art works have been presented in the United States, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Tan Zi Hao
Born in 1989, Tan Zi Hao is a visual artist attempting to find historical and socio-cultural linkage in a variegated community by exploring the modern visual culture of kitsch and vernaculars in Malaysia. Living in Seri Kembangan, he participated in the inaugural Entry Points art exhibition organized by 1948 Art Space. He is currently working as a research assistant in a local art institution

MYANMAR

Zoncy (Zon Sapal Phyu) was born in 1987, Myanmar. She graduated with a B.C.Sc.(Hons.) degree from University of Computer Studies, Yangon in 2007.She studied basic drawing and water color painting under art master, Daw Nwe Nwe Yi from 2003 to 2007. She participated in Nippon International Performance Art Festival 2009 in Japan, Beyond Pressure International Performance Art Event 2009, Myanmar and NIPAF-MYAN 2009, Myanmar. She is starting her career as a visual artist as well as writing news and art interviews in some journals and magazines.

THAILAND

SINGAPORE

Jacklyn Soo holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, as well as a Diploma in Fine Art (Sculpture) from LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts. She is a versatile artist, accomplished in visual arts and music. She started this array of creative expression as a Fine Art student in 1997 at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts and has participated in selected exhibitions in Singapore and internationally. She is focused on the nature of the self with history, culture, environment and memories. Jacklyn later obtained her Degree (Hons) in Fine Art in 2005- 2006 at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts where she was given a scholarship and travel grant to Hong Kong to pursue her artistic development.

Her first solo show was debuted at Your Mother Gallery in Hindoo Road where she showed paintings and drawings of dreams and sold six paintings, one of which to Singaporean Cultural Medallion Artist and Prolific Artist, Mr. Tang Da Wu. Later in 2007, Jacklyn Soo appeared on Arts Central, Frequency of the City reality programme about Singaporean musicians collecting sounds and noises from the street and mixing into an innovative music TV series. She represented as a member of experimental ethnic band, Travellators and singer-songwriter for Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Jacklyn is also the curator for a newly founded, volunteer-run organization promoting the voices of contemporary young artists in Singapore through varied platforms.

One lick less makes his own unique handmade guitars, which he delivers on stage, working rough and tight on the strings leading them to break. Between song and blues, noise and fury, his howling, but still melodic voice undoes itself in powerful joy. Equally confident with shorter and longer compositions, his rich textured playing style, fusing American folk and experimental traditions, is strong and extremely sensitive at the same time.

Born in the South of France, he started playing solo in the late 90s, and continues to cultivate his solo work alongside his many collaborations and involvements: with drummer Basile Ferriot (one lick less – and we could be quiet), guitarist Benjamin Renard (Red Horn Cannibals), Olivier Brisson and Christophe Marais (A.K. Studs), Xavier Houillot and Maxime Harnois (Anal Malox) or dance performer Violeta Salvatierra. He also contributes to live concerts and recordings for experimental films by Philippe Cote, Dominik Lange, as well as Silvia Maglioni and Graeme Thomson. More recently in July, One Lick Less performed to exhilarated audiences in various cities in China, such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chang Sha and Beijing.
